The presence of Sandhills Community College was a factor in Anne Gordy’s decision to move to Pinehurst. Anne’s work included training Laubach Literacy tutors, running camp programs for children with cancer, and being a court advocate for victims of domestic violence. She has seen how unexpected reversals can alter or end the path to higher education and the attainment of dreams. She became an SCC Guarantors but wanted personal involvement with a scholarship student who might have to abandon educational goals without outside financial assistance. The North Carolina Unit of The Herb Society of America, Inc. was organized in 1982 to further the knowledge and use of herbs and to share this interest and expertise with the greater community. The Southern Pines Civic Club was founded in 1907 by a group of civic minded ladies to improve life in Southern Pines, foster love for our beautiful community, educate our children in good citizenship and to welcome visitors and newcomers, enlisting their efforts in a mutual goal of making Southern Pines a wonderful place to be. Their belief that “education is the basis of everything” inspired Mr. and Mrs. William Weiss to make available scholarships to deserving students at Sandhills. The couple were met at their alma mater, Penn State, where he was an engineering student, and she was a math major. “You could say we fell in love over differential equations,” said William Weiss. The Thomas T. Hayes Memorial Scholarship was originally started by Hayes in 1977, after his death in 1987, his wife, Mrs. Cleon Hayes, has continued the scholarship as a memorial to her husband. After serving in the Army, Hayes attended NCSU on a football scholarship and received a degree in Architectural Engineering in 1949 and a degree in architecture in 1951. For a brief time, he worked with William Deitrick. In 1952, Hayes decided to go on his own and founded T. T. Hayes Jr. and Associates. Later he partnered with Tom Marshall to form Hayes Marshall and Associates; then in 1958 with

Whispers is a social, service, and philanthropic organization for all women of the Village of Whispering Pines. Whispers meets the second Wednesday of each month, September through May generally at the Country Club of Whispering Pines. Monthly program topic are listed in the Whispering Pines Telephone Directory. The Whispers Certified Nursing Assistant Scholarship Fund was created by the organization in loving memory of Agnes O. Buckley. As a volunteer she was dedicated to improving the quality of life and environment for those in and around the community of Whispering Pines.

Founded in 1974, Women of the Pines serves residents of Moore County, North Carolina, including the communities of Aberdeen, Foxfire, Jackson Springs, Pinehurst, Southern Pines, and Whispering Pines. The purpose of the Women of the Pines is to work together to provide assistance to those in need in our community. They work in concert with other established charities within our county to help them more effectively provide their services to the sick, the hungry, the homeless and the abused.
