The Pamela and Anthony Dodge Endowed Scholarship in memory of Ruth Butters, LPN was established in 2017 in loving memory of Pamela Dodge’s grandmother. The scholarship is awarded annually to deserving CNA and ADN students.

Pam Garty, who has taught nursing classes at Sandhills Community College since 1988, received her own degree at Sandhills. Both of her parents were instructors at the college; also, five of her six siblings in the Watts family went to Sandhills. But it was the urging of Dr. Donald Wallace at Moore Memorial Hospital that caused young Pam to begin her nursing studies. “I was working as a secretary and a technician at the hospital and Dr. Wallace recommended I begin the nursing program at Sandhills,” she recalls. “That turned out to be an excellent idea.” Mrs. Garty completed her Registered

The Pinehurst Garden Club is organized for the purpose of encouraging home and community horticultural improvements. Since its founding in 1981, the Pinehurst Garden Club has participated in numerous Village beautification projects. Members assist in the Village Spring and Fall plantings and decorating at Christmas time. Each branch of the Pinehurst Garden Club also participates in various beautification projects year-around. Richard “Dick” S. Waterman served in the United States Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a salesman for Dow Chemical Company and moved to Southern Pines in 1990 to be president of Waterstitch Company. He was a member of the Sandhills Chamber of Commerce and an active supporter of Sandhills Community College. He was an avid golfer, loved the Atlanta Braves, and collected Volkswagen Beetles. After he died in 2006, a remarkably generous estate gift was left to Sandhills Community College to endow the Richard S. Waterman Scholarships in Honor of The American Red Cross.

Prior to his death in 2002, Robert Dedman was Founder and Chairman of the Board of ClubCorp, Inc., the expansive operator of more than 260 clubs, resorts and public fee golf courses, including the Pinehurst Resort. His belief in success and the will to help others developed early, when as the son of a traveling salesman in rural Arkansas, an eighteen year-old Dedman vowed to make $50 million by the time he was fifty, and to give $1 million each year to charitable organizations. He achieved that goal, and his benevolence is exhibited in the many generous gifts he has bestowed on institutions

Russ Garman first visited Sandhills Community College shortly after moving to the area in 1987. Being a great enthusiast of recreational gardening he attended a gardening class taught by Harry Neeley to become more familiar with gardening in the Sandhills where the soil and plants are quite different from his native state of Michigan. Having enjoyed the first class, he soon after took a landscape gardening class taught by Dee Johnson. Since then he has taken many curriculum and continuing education classes—including several about managing personal finances. Russ has been a docent for the

Lieutenant General Adolph G. Schwenk retired from the Marine Corps on 1 July 1982. General Schwenk was presented the Distinguished Service Medal (Gold Star in lieu of a second award) upon his retirement for, “Exceptionally meritorious service to the Government of the United States in a duty of great responsibility as Commanding General, FMF , Atlantic; Commanding General, II Marine Amphibious Force; and Commanding General, FMF , Europe (Designate) from October 1980 through June 1982.
