John Krepick Memorial Endowed Scholarship

John Krepick was a lifelong educator who began his career as a high school teacher and coach and ultimately focused his efforts in community college education. He took great pride in helping students reach their potential and be productive members of the community. After serving for many years as Vice President of Orange County Community College in Middletown, NY, he was recruited in 1965 by the State of North Carolina to be the first President of Surry Community College in Mount Airy, NC. When he and his wife, Jean, arrived in western North Carolina there was no college. Surry CC was a true start-up situation and John functioned as architect, builder, fund raiser, recruiter, curriculum developer, and teacher.

After Jean passed away he moved to Southern Pines and returned to part time teaching at Sandhills Community College. He married Dorothy Hill and they lived near the Pine Needles golf course. Besides education, John’s other passion was golf. He always believed that in golf, as in life, you focus on the task at hand and be the best that you can be every day, regardless of the challenges that come your way.

The John Krepick Memorial Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a full-time student accepted in any program with tie-breaking preference given to business or turf management majors. Selection based on student’s integrity, and initiative. Student should have history of participating in community service (with a plus given to Boy or Girl Scouts or equivalent youth group participation), participation in a team sport or activities (i.e., basketball, baseball, golf, dance, debate teams, etc.), and summertime work to help pay own way. Recipient should have a minimum 3.0 GPA in high school and to maintain a 3.0 GPA at Sandhills. Student to provide clearly articulated and well-conceived goals for SCC education.

_John Krepick fue educador por toda la vida que empezó su carrera como profesor en una escuela secundaria y entrenador y últimamente se enfocó sus esfuerzas en la educación de colegio universitario. Se sintió un gran orgullo en ayudar a estudiantes a lograr su potencial y ser miembros productivos de la comunidad. Después de servir por muchos años como Vicepresidente del Colegio Universitario del Municipio Orange en Middletown, Nueva York, él fue reclutado en 1965 por el Estado de Carolina del Norte para ser el primer Presidente del Colegio Universitario de Surry en Mount Airy, NC. Cuando él y su esposa, Jean, llegaron en el oeste de Carolina del Norte, no hubo una universidad. El Colegio Universitario de Surry era una situación verdaderamente “startup” y John funcionó como arquitecto, constructor, recaudador de fondos, reclutador, diseñador de currículo, y profesor.

Después de que se murió Jean, él se mudó a Southern Pines y regresó a enseñar de jornada parcial en Sandhills Community College. Se casó con Dorothy Hill y ellos vivieron cerca del campo de golf de Pine Needles. Aparte de la educación, su otra pasión era el golf. Siempre creía en que el golf, así como también en la vida, hay que enfocarse en la tarea a la vuelta de la esquina y ser lo mejor que se pueda ser todos los días, a pesar de todo.

La Beca en Memoria de John Krepick se le galardona a un/una estudiante de jornada completa aceptado/a en cualquier programa, y en el caso de un empate, se da una preferencia primero a estudiantes persiguiendo una carrera en educación, y siguiente en enfermería, con la elección basada en la honestidad y la iniciativa del estudiante. El/La estudiante debe tener una historia de involucrarse en servicio comunitario (se da una aventaja a un Boy Scout o a una Girl Scout o la participación en un programa de juventud equivalente), la participación en un equipo deportivo (por ejemplo: el básquetbol, béisbol, golf), y trabajo vernal para pagar por su propia educación. El/La beneficiario/a debe mantener un GPA de al menos 3.0 en la escuela secundaria así como también en Sandhills Community College. El/La estudiante tiene que producir metas claras y bien hechas para su educación en Sandhills Community College._
