Mal & Marge Owings Keep Moore County Beautiful Scholarship

Mal and Marge Owings were instrumental in the creation of Keep Moore County Beautiful in 1988. Mr. Owings served on the board of Keep America Beautiful and became heavily involved with North Carolina Clean and Beautiful, working closely with the N.C. Department of Transportation to institute a program of planting flowers in the median of highways which we all enjoy today. Education was also very important to Mal Owings, and he was a strong supporter of Sandhills Community College. In 1983, Mal began a second career when he was elected to serve as a Moore County commissioner for eight years, where he brought the “911” emergency number to all of Moore County. While Mal Owings, and his wife of 52 years, Marge Owings, have both passed, their mission to spread natural beauty and foster education are both living on in the Mal & Marge Owings Scholarship.

The Mal & Marge Owings Keep Moore County Beautiful Scholarship is awarded to a first-year Moore County graduate in LSG or majoring in an Environmental field. Student must present record of being actively involved in volunteer activities and leadership roles in Moore County, and may continue the scholarship with a 3.0 GPA.
