Miriam J. Burlingame Endowed Sch. for Respiratory Care

Established in 1995, the Miriam J. Burlingame Endowed Scholarship for Respiratory Care provides tuition assistance for first and second-year Respiratory Care students with financial need who have demonstrated potential for success in Respiratory Care.

In addition to the scholarship provided by the Burlingame’s, they were supportive of the Sandhills Community College Landscape Gardening Program. There is room named in their honor in the Ball Garden Visitors Center at the college. Mrs. Burlingame was born in Aberdeen to the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Talbot Johnson. She graduated from Randolph Macon College. She was in charge of the North Carolina Exhibit at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, where she met her future husband, the late Westcott Burlingame Jr. They were married in Aberdeen in 1940. The Burlingame’s lived in Rochester, N.Y., where she was a homemaker and active in volunteer work, and they moved to Forest Hills in Aberdeen in 1977. Mrs. Burlingame was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church, and served as a volunteer at the Southern Pines Civic Club and Moore Regional Hospital. For her pastimes, she enjoyed sewing, reading, gardening, playing bridge and traveling.
