Thomas T. and Cleon Hayes
The Thomas T. Hayes Memorial Scholarship was originally started by Hayes in 1977, after his death in 1987, his wife, Mrs. Cleon Hayes, has continued the scholarship as a memorial to her husband.
After serving in the Army, Hayes attended NCSU on a football scholarship and received a degree in Architectural Engineering in 1949 and a degree in architecture in 1951. For a brief time, he worked with William Deitrick. In 1952, Hayes decided to go on his own and founded T. T. Hayes Jr. and Associates. Later he partnered with Tom Marshall to form Hayes Marshall and Associates; then in 1958 with Calvin Howell to form Hayes-Howell and Associates.
During his career, Hayes became very well known for his Mid-Century Modernist designs, and his designs can be seen across the state in interesting and noteworthy modern homes. His touch is also seen across campus, as Hayes was the original architect for Sandhills Community College.
The Thomas T. Hayes Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a rising second-year Architectural Engineering Technology student. Student must demonstrate satisfactory scholastic performance during first year of study, and student must demonstrate financial need.
