Sandhills Motoring Festival
The Sandhills Motoring Festival (SMF) was initiated in 2018 by Porsche Club of America member, Marvin Waters, and Mercedes Benz Club of America members, Steve Redwine and Bill Faison. Taking place over Memorial Day Weekend, it was a tremendously successful event with over 150 participants from North Carolina and from other areas along the East Coast. Members of both clubs participated in Cars & Coffee, a Southern BBQ with a Bluegrass Band, tours of local automotive facilities, road rallies, luncheons, awards dinner, and a car show in the Village of Pinehurst.
For Memorial Day Weekend 2019, the Sandhills Motoring Festival had a number of events lined up for every car enthusiast culminating in “Concours in the Village” on Sunday May 26th on the streets of the historic Village of Pinehurst. The 2019 Festival raised over $7,700 to benefit the Sandhills Community College Foundation and the Automotive Technologies Department.
For 2020, the Sandhills Motoring Festival was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols that prevented gatherings from taking place. However, over the 2020 Labor Day Weekend, auto enthusiasts participated in our first Cars & Coffee, followed by a 30 car “follow the leader” road rally, and several small dinner gatherings. The majority of 2020 was spent by SMF staff planning and organizing an improved Festival for 2021.
Memorial Day Weekend, 2021, the Sandhills Motoring Festival returned and enthralled the Sandhills area and Village of Pinehurst with exotic, unique cars and auto enthusiasts young and old. Kicking off the weekend with a BBQ and Block Party at the historic Pine Crest Inn, our sponsors Hagerty Insurance and Foreign Cars Italia put on a cocktail hour preceding dinner with a very special Ferrari display. Saturday morning featured the launch of the SMF Road Rally, won by local Pinehurst residents, and the evening featured the SMF Hangar Party at the local Moore County Airport. Sunday was the main event with the Concours in the Village set against the beautiful backdrop of the Village of Pinehurst. With over 150 cars in attendance and thousands of specators flooding the streets, the day was filled with picture taking, smiles, and pure auto enthusiasm. The weekend wrapped up with our Awards Dinner and auction. For 2021, the Sandhills Motoring Festival raised over $20,000 for an endowment to the Automotive Technologies Program at Sandhills Community College. We would like to thank our sponsors, entrants, and supporters for helping us exceed and double our goal for 2021!
The Sandhills Motoring Festival returns for it’s Memorial Day Weekend events in 2022. Applications for our Concours in the Village are exceeding our expectations and 2022 is off to a great start. The Concours in the Village will feature some new Classes designed to expand the quality and variety of automobiles that will grace the streets of the historic Village of Pinehurst. Our other events will also be held, with expansion and enhancements to bring out a great experience for participants and spectators alike.
