Miriam and Paul Borel
Having parents who were deeply involved in the Salvation Army was an early and profound influence on the life of Miriam Chesham Borel.
The charity and social services organization professes the advancement of Christian religion, and accordingly, promotes the advancement of education, the relief of poverty and other charitable causes deemed beneficial to society and humankind. Officers and ministers in the organization devote their entire lives to helping others.
Bringing relief and comfort to others was important to Mrs. Borel, and she ultimately chose a profession which demonstrated her convictions. Prior to her marriage to Paul Borel, she pursued a career as a social worker.
The Borels’ daughter, Nancy Borel Ellis, serves on the Sandhills Foundation Board of Directors. She recalled that a basic tenet of the Salvation Army is “serving God by helping man,” and she believes that her mother has lived her life according to this principle.
For his wife’s eightieth birthday, Paul Borel chose to honor and surprise her with a Sandhills scholarship in her name. His generosity made possible the Miriam Chesham Borel Endowed Scholarship, which provides scholarship funds for second-year Human Services Technology students who have demonstrated both financial need and potential success.
